Here it is July 7th and already I feel as if summer has yet again won. July is the craziest month for me. After the 4th there is a certain let down as it becomes the ungodly hot and humid season in South Dakota, the kids are all sick of all the together time and my husband, finally done with his National Guard trainings for the summer and wants us to devote all our free weekends to his favorite passion "fishing". I love my husband but fishing isn't my thing then add to that a boat full of crabby tired kids, and Jersey the lab and my fear of large bodies of water that I can't see the bottom of. I think I can trace that back to my younger days of watching JAWS. My husband has spent several hours trying to explain my irrational fear of small fishing boats (19 foot) on large bodies of water. To get me over my fear he took me out fishing over Memorial Day 2008, just my man and his dog, we may get away without the kids but never the dog.
So here it is, picture a romantic spring day with me, my man and Jersey. I was excited he could fish all he wants but I was going to get some sun and read a good book. Rarely have I ever been on the boat with out the kids. We take off early in the morning before the kids wake up and want to go. We drive two and a half hours to his "favorite" Walleye spot ( he only fishes for Walleye) unloaded the boat and went out on to the lake, which was a lake made by damming up the river. We got going, moved out of the bay and hit five foot white caps, yes, I did not stutter they were coming up over the side of the boat. Needless to say, I was oh so pleased with our current situation when if seems our big motor lost pressure which causes this alarm to start buzzing, freaking out the dog, who then puked on the floor. Thank heavens for the small trolling motor. We made it back to shore, the dog still loves to go fishing. I prefer to keep my feet firmly planted on solid ground.
Summer 2009 so far has been better, I have successfully survived without having to get on the boat, however, I know my time will be running out as the last week in July we will be going on a family camping trip. It should be interesting, in order to get there successfully I have to learn how to pull the 5th wheel camper, but that will be a story for another time.
